In 2004, the School Library Association established an annual Award to recognise and celebrate school librarians whose work is outstanding and exemplary. Recipients may be chosen from every sector of education.
For example, the Award might be given to:

an innovative chartered librarian in charge of a highly developed secondary school library |
|
|
someone working with limited resources in ways that demonstrate what can be achieved in nursery schools |
|
|
a teacher who has transformed the use of books and information media in a primary school |
|
|
a librarian working under difficult conditions who has developed thriving activities out of school hours. |
The Award may be given to people who are not members of the School Library Association. Aidan Chambers, award-winning author for children and young people and President of the School Library Association said, "There is a great need for an award that will celebrate the achievements of those working in school libraries, helping to create readers and the information culture for young people."
